“For a big band experience that engages the ears and the mind, it’s hard to go past the BCJO for the exciting, contemporary big band sound”
BCJO is a 19 piece big band featuring Ingrid James on vocals and Pablo Matus (Chile) on percussion. They perform modern big band jazz music and is a showcase for established and emerging Brisbane jazz musicians.
BCJO performs a wide range of modern big band music including latin, funk, swing and gospel. The repertoire focuses on jazz music from the last 20 years, with charts from composers such as Jaco Pastorius, Michel Camilo and Gordon Goodwin.
Influences
Although swing music was the original big band sound, modern groups play a wide range of styles. In the repertoire of BCJO, we have charts from the big bands of Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich and Woody Herman as well as more recent bands such as Gordon Goodwin, Bob Mintzer and even the Phil Collins Big Band. Local composers Tim Davies, Brad Esbensen, Louise Denson have also contributed charts and vocalist Ingrid James brings her unique arrangements from Los Angeles recordings with San Gabriel 7 (arranger Dave Cushman). In a concert, you will hear funk, latin, gospel, rock in addition to swing and blues. Improvisation is a key component of jazz and BCJO is fortunate to showcase several major Brisbane jazz musicians.
Doors open at 6.30pm. Show starts at 8.00pm.
